Six men in Australia have been charged by the police over the alleged kidnapping and torture of a man in Sydney. The victim, a 26-year-old named Peter Vuong, was rescued by police in an armed raid after being held captive for six days. During his ordeal, he was subjected to serious physical abuse, including having his teeth forcibly removed.
Mr Vuong is currently receiving treatment in hospital, and further arrests are anticipated. The kidnapping began when a group of men armed with a sledgehammer and a gun broke into his home in western Sydney in the early hours of last Thursday. He was then taken away and "repeatedly assaulted and tortured over a six-day period".
The group's intention was "to extort a large sum of money", according to Detective Supt Joe Doueihi. Following extensive inquiries, armed police raided a run-down house in the suburb of Belmore on Tuesday evening and found Mr Vuong alive but badly injured.
One man was arrested at the property, and five others were detained at other locations in the city. The suspects have been charged with "serious violent offences", including aggravated breaking and entering, grievous bodily harm, and possession of an unauthorised firearm.
All except one have been remanded in custody and will appear in court in May. The investigation is ongoing, and further arrests are expected.
